Kindle Keyboard (3rd Generation, k3gb) JAILBREAK
Posted on Sat 07 February 2026 in hack • 2 min read
Kindle Keyboard (3rd Generation) corresponds to the k3gb model.
WARNING!!! The further part of this procedure assumes that the Kindle serial number starts with B00A, because my device has a serial number starting with B00A, which means it is the k3gb version.
Check the serial number of your Kindle (you will find it on the back cover) and use the appropriate files! Read the instructions in the file 1-Jailbreak/README.txt.
Here I provide the relevant details:
- k3g means K3 3G (US [B006]),
- k3w means K3 WiFi [B008],
- k3gb means K3 3G (UK [B00A]).
So the file Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3g_install.bin is the jailbreak for a Kindle with a serial number starting with B006.
Download archive with required files
Kindle-Keyboard-Jailbreak.tar.gz
and unpack with:
tar xvf Kindle-Keyboard-Jailbreak.tar.gz
cd Kindle-Keyboard-Jailbreak
0. Firmware Update
I found information that KUAL works with the new certificate only after updating the firmware to version 3.4.3. My device originally had 3.2.1, and to reach 3.4.3 I had to install the intermediate firmware versions sequentially.
For each file from the 0-update-firmware directory, install them in the following order:
- Update_kindle_3.3_B00A.bin
- Update_kindle_3.4_B00A.bin
- Update_kindle_3.4_3.4.2_B00A.bin
- Update_2687240004-3543620001.bin
Sequence example:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb
cp 0-update-firmware/{next_version}.bin /mnt/usb
umount /mnt/usb
From the Kindle menu, select Settings, then press the menu button again and choose Update Your Kindle.
The device will update, reboot, and then repeat the same steps with the next file until version 3.4.3 is reached.

IMPORTANT – READ CAREFULLY
DO NOT OPEN ANY ITEM (BOOK) WITH "TEST" IN ITS NAME THAT APPEARS ON THE KINDLE. If you do, you will have to repeat the entire process from the beginning.
It is best to delete this file immediately after completing this step and before performing the jailbreak.
1. Jailbreak
The jailbreak file used is:
Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3gb_install.bin
This is required because the firmware version is 3.4.3.
After connecting the Kindle via USB, copy the file to the root directory:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb cp 1-Jailbreak/Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3gb_install.bin /mnt/usb umount /mnt/usb
From the menu, select Settings, then press the menu button again and choose Update Your Kindle.
The jailbreak process takes approximately 15 seconds.
2. New Certificates
After rebooting, copy the new certificates to the Kindle:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb sudo cp 2-DevCerts/Update-mkk-20250419-k3gb-B00A_keystore-install.bin /mnt/usb umount /mnt/usb
Disconnect the USB cable and, as before, select Settings, then press the menu button and choose Update Your Kindle.
3. KUAL
After rebooting, copy KUAL to the Kindle:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb sudo cp KUAL-KDK-1.0.azw2 /mnt/usb/documents/ umount /mnt/usb
Disconnect the USB cable and again select Settings, then the menu button, and Update Your Kindle.
After rebooting, KUAL should be fully functional.
4. KUAL Helper Extensions and KOReader
First, install the KUAL extensions:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb sudo cp -r 4-Extensions/* /mnt/usb/
Then install KOReader:
sudo cp -r 5-Koreader/* /mnt/usb/ umount /mnt/usb
After launching KUAL, the extensions should be visible.
Additional hacks can be installed depending on their form: some as update packages (e.g. screensavers), others as KUAL packages (e.g. Gawk).
